Charles Sourby (who went by Charles Nature on this blog) passed away earlier this year. I just found out about it today. Charles was a recreation therapist who used horticulture therapy in his practice. His last blog is seen just below this posting. Charles was a frequent contributor to this blog and to the Therapeutic Recreation Directory. We will miss you Charles!

Hello, I am the sister of Charles Sourby. Thank you for your condolences. Charles died on June 7th from Multiple Sclerosis. He was a great believer in the value of Therapeutic Recreation and worked for many years in the field, and taught classes in horticultural therapy. I am keeping that website going and hope others will pursue Hort therapy in their programs.
MS took away the things he loved to do in the great outdoors, home, yard, work, and with friends and family. But he was able to maintain a positive attitude most of the time, and took pleasure in the things he could do and enjoy.
He had MS for about 10 years, but it was the Primary Progressive type and was very aggressive and fast moving. He kept going to work in his wheelchair, but it finally was too much. He was able to live at home with a great many changes to the house, and this was a blessing, for he did not want to live in a nursing home. Unfortunately, he became more and more disabled from MS, including pain. He wanted to live, but MS did take his life. If you would like to read a tribute I wrote about him, please contact me at sourby@aol.com
thank you, Debra Sourby
